Matching the light

I spent a good few days pondering how to shoot the Suzuki Uno boys. I wanted to get something a bit special, something unlike most of the cycling team shots I've seen. And the last shot of the day was the 'money' shot - here's what we ended up with....

The team - focusing comes naturally...

The setup

A quick recce to Mt Stromlo a few days before the shoot was a good insight to assess the light we'd have available on the day. With the sun setting at 7pm, we'd have an hour or so to try a few different things.

What luck! - the walls that housed the first telescope installed at Stromlo were still standing after the 2003 bushfires destroyed most of the buildings. Who'd have thought these walls would have retained their brilliant white, and one wall in particular caught and reflected the late afternoon sun, acting like a huge softbox and no need to fuss with balancing the white balance.

Excellent, there's all the head-shots sorted and no flash required - sweet!

And then there's the location - something that would match their team colours, their sport and their style...where better than Mt Stromlo at sunset (hint - I used CTO (orange) gels on the off-camera flashes to match the warmth of the setting sun - that made sense)

But what really made it work was the Team - I had them hanging around for over an hour for the three best minutes of shooting and it didn't phase them. I just hope the result is worthy of their patience.

Nice work fellas.
